Though this afternoon I finally got outside to enjoy the spring weather and melting river, a Fall/Winter collection is what is catching my eye today. The newest from Audrey Cantwell of Black Market Baby, in fact, who now has a new label named Ovate. I particularly love those loose knits, which are perfect for layering with, say, a mesh dress or a retro bathing suit, such as this one by Toronto-based label Minnow Bathers. But please, winter, stay far far away.

The Wicker Man
...Well, I haven't bought anything online for 5 weeks. Which brings me to my second reason of blogger's block. My beloved go-to Buffalo jeans that had lasted me much longer than a pair of jeans is expected to have passed away. This inevitably threw a wrench into my normal style, as I had to reconfigure over half of my normal outfits. And when I can't dress how I'd like, I feel quite uninspired in general. The last time they were worn was at Iron Maiden, which I think is a good send off for any loyal pair of skinny black jeans. Sigh. But yes, about spending. I did purchase a replacement pair of jeans, this time from the Mavi label (which has been kind to me in the past). They'd be absolutely perfect if they were higher waisted, and so they may in fact lead to me a new online purchase (to make sure I feel adequately covered): this gorgeous mesh-lined Interstellar Bodysuit from Black Market Baby's new 'Solar Eye' collection. I kind of need something to wear under those sheer American Apparel loose tanks I may or may not have bought as well... And cue random Iron Maiden photo from our local paper's review...
Thirdly, for both mental and physical reasons, I've been thinking about a career change, and that has rather distracted me from life in general. Connected to this is the fact that a lovely distant friend is going through a similar thing, and I've been trying in vain to come up with a sufficient argument for her to stay doing what she's doing, but for me to stop doing what I'm doing. Oh, Life, why do you have to be so difficult (and yet not quite difficult enough to feel justified for complaining about you)?
The fourth reason is that Summer has actually found my city on time, and I wasn't quite prepared. The heat makes me rather lethargic. It also doesn't help that my shift work clashes quite loudly with the weather. And that my layering system fails me in such times. Though I have made a new friend: short dresses. I don't even know myself anymore...
Oh, and fifthly (that word doesn't sound clean enough for this blog): I just saw that on other computers, my blog looks horrible. I spend most of my blogging time getting everything properly formatted, and now I see that all my efforts are all for naught. At least if you're not on a 13" MacBook Pro using Safari. So just remember, everything you see on here actually looks better in real life. For instance, if you see two pictures in a row, followed by only one picture, all three are meant to be sharing one row, as seen in this screen shot below. A thousand apologies, and a thousand sighs.
Now, I'm off to see if my colleagues have good taste in coffee, as they claim they do. And if such is the case, I might come back in a couple of hours truly inspired...

Etsy updates
1) I just discovered peace4you.net, and needed to share. This lovely man creates messenger bags from upcycled military bags, military tents, and leather jackets. So yes, they do contain leather, but I think I can get behind making sure the leather is used to its fullest extent if it's simply being recycled.
2) These are actually from a couple days ago, but I thought I'd include them here. The double t-shirt dress has been revamped by Take Off Your Clothes, complete with some softer t-shirts and a drawstring around the neck for more convertible-ness. I'm also loving this optical illusion type top with the longer draped front.
3) Audrey of Black Market Baby has just posted her Spring 2010 'Mysterium' collection, which has some lovely sheer and drapey pieces (with some great photos as well!).

4) A few more free association neckpieces have been posted in the Quillinan shop. Each can be worn hanging lower like a pendant, or as a neck ruff/choker. This one is my favorite.
5) And there are some gorgeous new wool and jersey creations in the hier apparel shop. Hmm, methinks I need to wear a hier apparel piece today.

In My Pocket

Second, I'd stuff in a pair of Hydra Heart vegan shoes for wherever my feet take me, indoors or outdoors.

Third, I'd ball up a Black Market Baby Spider Mesh Tank Top, as you never know when you might need another layer.

And last, I'd carry a Pocket Art Mirror from Lisa Falzon, for a bit of inspiration, and a chance to see what dreams are creeping up behind me.

Oh, and I'd quite like it if mydearthing's One Pocket Dress were my pocket.

Best Winter Accessory Ever
Attila Design strikes again! I think these cowl/harness pieces are ingenious (here, here, and here). I would snatch one up immediately if they were sans leather. Tiina, you're my hero.
In other news, I think I've found my 2nd pair of leggings. These are by Babooshka (left), and are a wonderful vegan friendly version of the leather panel ones by Black Market Baby (right) which caught my eye.

Handmade rant (yes, I 'made' it myself)
While this diagnosis saved $60, I decided that it was a good time to have a momentary freak-out time, as The Hoody still seems only 99.99% perfect to me. While this would've been okay at a lower price, that unfixable (or, at least unfixable by a tailor) 0.01% bothers me, especially because of that added and quite exorbitant customs fee. So then I questioned my whole set of consumer morals, namely: Is it really worth paying much more for handmade clothing, rather than buying affordable store-bought stuff?
So then I went to the store where I got the original hoody that I got married in. I've visited that store in its various locations a handful of times in an attempt to find a replacement, and have never been able to. Today however, there was a huge table of hoodies of the same brand (Song), at a price of 2 for $60. $30 each! I almost choked. My first response was to find my size and buy two as quick as possible. But then I looked at one more closely. First of all, they don't have the special details that my marriage hoody does, indicating the inevitable drop in quality of the brand over the last 4 years. Secondly, the fabric content was 60% cotton, 40% polyester. I'm a cotton hoody girl through and through, and will only accept Lycra or spandex combinations. Lastly, and most importantly, while is says 'designed in Canada', the hoodies are, not surprisingly, made in China.
These three things were enough to snap me back into reality, in which buying sweatshop-made clothing from chain stores frequented by 99% of pre-teens and scenesters is just plain wrong. It's true that, when I began buying handmade clothing from DiY sellers on eBay, it was the same price or cheaper than shopping in stores that I liked. However, once I began to buy more than I usually would have in a mall, and then when I discovered the plethora of talent on Etsy and Not Just a Label, I definitely began to spend much more on clothing than I ever would have imagined. I'm not suggesting that this is necessary; you don't need to feel obligated to support every indie designer out there, or to buy the more expensive pieces to provide more food for that person's table. However, I don't feel good supporting a large corporation that condones modern slave labour, and I simply feel happy buying a piece that supports labels which are predominately run by a single person. Furthermore, I believe that such a person is definitely justified to charge more money for a piece that is designed, cut, sewn, packaged, and shipped by them alone. And with the wonder that is Etsy, it's still possible to find pieces that are more suited to your budget (for example, in the world of hoodies, Black Market Baby's Belted Hoodie comes in at $80 and is available in 3 sizes and 3 colours) if you aren't ready to buy that investment piece from your Favorites or an indie designer's website. Having said that, my conscience is happily clear whether I spend a little or a lot when I know exactly where the piece came from and who is making an honest living from the money. So, from myself and The Hoody to that $30 hoody - take that!

My hoody addiction
As I will soon be donning the most wonderful hoody to ever be created, I know I do not need another, possibly ever. However, I have long known that I have an addiction. And thus I would love to get Black Market Baby's Belted Hoodie. I have a couple of pieces with that long-in-front-short-in-back hem, which I just love for layering. And it's lovingly made in Montreal, where I should have been born. I also love the Bondage Leggings (below), which may or may not be sold out at the moment. It's too bad that today marks the end of my spending for a while. No more big purchases at least. Sigh.
