Carly Hunter: Ocean Noir

Goodness gracious, the collective fashion weeks have been such a snooze fest this round that I'm almost thankful I haven't had the time to pay attention to anyone's runway coverage (though I'm still counting on you, YOHJ JUN VIV...). When it comes down to it, unless you're a fashion god who has their own mythology (and is still adding to it) and has the both the ability and balls to create or re-imagine images/symbols/techniques/etc. that will change the fashion industry as a whole (Lee, here's looking at you, kid), seeing models clad in 'big name' labels going down the runway every six months just seems like a useless exercise that will inevitably produce the same mindless drivel, i.e. unwarranted lengthy narratives that amount to nothing but self-serving hogwash. Then again, I've always hated the big labels that are big just because we're told they are, and reading runway reviews is like reading 'top critic' film reviews - I can form my own opinion, and don't need to know what Mr. Big says about a film I'd never both watching anyway, so it's all just a waste of my time. Time that can be better spent translating Catullus, learning Italian, or reading about literary theory.

Anyway, I do always have time for designers such as Carly Hunter who keep it fresh and don't require us to mine our thesauri and symbol dictionaries to pinpoint just what she's trying to do. I like what I see, and I'd wear it if I could. And, the label is made both locally and ethically. The end.

If travel is searching

So, it appears that posting anything of Carly Hunter's is a yearly affair here on kOs, and that annual appointed time has arrived. I feel like I'm maybe the wrong blogger to be posting this piece, as it seems pretty much made for Susie Bubble, but I'd really quite like it for myself.

This slouchy/oversized blazer is also relevant to my interests. I liked my button-up and blazer combo yesterday so much that I was searching for another button-up in a couple of local shops to get me to the next laundry day (and/or the next not-fall-weather day). But I was rather astounded to find that all the button-ups, at least in my immediate area, are either really quite oversized or have batwing/dolman sleeves, making layering with a normal fitting blazer rather awkward. Perhaps then I should be looking at a looser fit blazer that could fit one and all types of button-ups? Or people should just make normal shirts...

Carly Hunter, XI

While my Google sidebar search box doesn't seem to be working, it seems that I have sorely neglected the newer works of Carly Hunter, which I was just reacquainted with whilst browsing The Shop. These are from the current A/W 10 'XI' collection, which incorporates fetishistic and 90's grunge elements. And I thought those were just some nice zips, chains, simple shapes and simple drapes... It's a shame that all the pieces in The Shop are only in size 6, as Carly has some rather reasonable prices for Australian loveliness...

In other Shop news, seven pieces from Konrad Parol's 'REBELS' collection are now available! Mmm...Polish greys...

Carly Hunter, bustier/kanga extraordinaire

So, I've decided what Quillinan neck piece I shall grace my credit card bill with. But is it the right decision?!! Does it matter?!! No! Why? Because my man has come home!!! And I've finally had a proper sleep!!! Oh, and because I'll own a Quillinan piece.

In other news, I love Carly Hunter's A/W 09 'Royal' collection. The modified kanga pocket/faux bustier detailing is so striking, and a very pleasant combination of two of my favorite things (corsets and hoodies). Definitely something I'd want to rock quite regularly once the weather becomes colder (so, tomorrow).

My favorite piece overall, however, is the long dress with the drawstring bottom. I'm praying that that is my good friend, jersey. Oh goodness, I'm pretty sure I can do away with pants forever if I can add more pieces like this to my wardrobe. And that would make me quite happy. Except I'm keeping my Joe's Jeans, thank you.
